What are bathroom electrical zones and why do they matter?

BS 7671 divides bathrooms into zones based on proximity to water. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower itself. Zone 1 is directly above the bath or shower. Zone 2 extends 600mm beyond the bath or shower area. Each zone requires different IP ratings and restricts what type of electrical equipment can be installed.
